Fission gas release in MOX fuel assemblies may limit the maximum burn-up time of MOX fuel. About 30% of the plutonium originally loaded into MOX fuel is consumed by use in a thermal reactor. Composition of MOX fuel Composition of MOX fuel for a ton of metal (uranium + plutonium). The fissile isotopes (uranium-235, Plutonium-239 and 241) represent 4.3% of the total. Uranium-235 constitutes only 0.2%, since "depleted" uranium is used in the fabrication of MOX fuels. Composition of MOX fuel Composition of MOX fuel for a ton of metal (uranium + plutonium). ABSTRACT . The study was focused on the analysis of light water Small Modular Reactor (SMR) with flexible fuel configurations. The core design, based on the Westinghouse UO The ORANO MELOX recycling plant, located on the Marcoule site in the Gard, manufactures MOX fuels for nuclear power generation plants in various countries.

Variables considered are: fuel composition (if UO 2 or MOX, and in the case of MOX, PuO 2 mole fraction, y), temperature (T), porosity (p) or fraction of the theoretical density (% TD), burnup (B), and oxygen-to-metal (O/M) ratio or deviation from stoichiometry (x=2−O/M). Symposium on ‘MOX Fuel Cycle Technologies for Medium and Long Term Deployment’ in which more than 150 participants from 28 countries and four international organizations took part.

Plutonium isotopes are much more radioactive than those of uranium. MOX fuel, short for mixed-oxide fuel, is a mixture of uranium and plutonium oxide. Most reactors use uranium fuel. As uranium fuel burns, some of it is converted into plutonium, so all operating reactors have plutonium in their core. Safety implications differ depending on the amount of MOX fuel that is used. The MOX fuel contains between 3% and 5% PuO 2 blended with natural or depleted uranium dioxide (in the proportion of 95–97%). The PuO 2 replaces the enriched fraction of 235 U oxide in the regular UO 2 fuel.

In order to overcome the spectrum hardening effect from plutonium isotopes in MOX fuel and to be able to have a core fully loaded with MOX fuels, a minor modification from the conventional 16X16 PWR type fuel assembly was proposed [3]. It is characterized by an internal region of the fuel MOX fuel may end up costing Duke money, rather than generating fuel-cost savings. MOX is several times more expensive than conventional uranium fuel.
