His poetic youth has, unfortunately, been disturbed by the pedantry of the classic school; but now he has the ‘Globe’ on his side, and is thus sure of his game. Speaking to his young disciple Johann Peter Eckermann in January 1827, the seventy-seven-year-old Goethe used his newly minted term Weltliteratur, which passed into common currency after Eckermann published his Gespräche mit Goethe in den letzten Jahren seines Lebens in 1835, three years after the poet's death. The term crystallized both a World Literature before Goethe. In What is World Literature?(2003), David Damrosch returns to the famous conversation between Goethe and Eckermann on January 31, 1827 to define world literature as “a mode of circulation and of reading, a mode that is as applicable to individual works as to bodies of material, available for reading established classics and new discoveries alike” (5). It was on a winter evening in Weimar in 1827, so the story goes, that Johann Wolfgang von Goethe coined the term Weltliteratur. In conversation with his assistant Eckermann, he remarks, “I am more and more convinced that poetry is a common property of humanity, revealing itself everywhere and at all times in hundreds and hundreds of human beings.”¹ Following the capacious universalism of Weltliteratur, in this case, begins not with that January evening, but with the appendix. Fritz Strich concluded his seminal study Goethe und die Weltliteratur (1946) with an appendix of the twenty passages from Goethe’s oeuvre in which the term Weltliteratur appeared.2 In its chronological span from January 15, 1827 to April 24, 1831, Strich’s Acknowledging the English poet as the inspiration for Euphorion, the ill-fated son of Faust and Helena in the second part of his tragedy, Goethe had told Eckermann in July 1827, ‘I 5 Lord George Gordon Byron (1980–93), Complete Poetical Works, ed.

Books by Johann Peter Eckermann. Gespräche mit Goethe – Wikipedia Goethe mentioned that he had read a Chinese novel and Eckermann replied that it must have been very strange. Goethe said that, no, it was much less strange than one would think, and that it was more decent than most French novels.
When he developed his idea of world literature in conversation with Eckermann, and spoke of the need for acquainting oneself (as he did) with foreign literatures, he added that, however much one admired them, none could serve as a pattern. In his conversation with J. P. Eckermann, Goethe spoke of the advent of “the epoch of world literature” in talking about his reading experience of a Chinese novel in translation, and the idea of Weltliteratur since Goethe has always implied the transcendence of European or any other national or regional tradition of literature and culture Weltliteratur, in this case, begins not with that January evening, but with the appendix.
